[ForTranslation] How to record walks with your dog

Walk lets you record and save your walks with your pet, so you can see the route you took, distance covered, and time spent together. Here's how to use it.

 

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • Your tracker on your pet
  • The Tractive app open and signed in
  • Your phone's GPS and location services turned on
  • Bluetooth enabled on your phone

 

Important:

  • Walk uses your phone's GPS to track your route and is best used while your pet is on a leash walking closely next to you.
  • Walk is only available to dogs.

 


 

Steps

Step 1: Start recording your walk

  1. In the Tractive app, go to hc_icon_map.svg Map.
  2. Select hc_icon_walk.svg Walk to start recording your walk.
  3. Head out on your walk with your pet.
  4. As you walk, the app tracks your route in real-time and displays it on the map. You'll see the path you've taken update as you move.

 

What you'll see while walking:

  • Your walking route displayed on the map
  • Distance covered so far
  • Time elapsed
  • Your pet's location in real-time

Keep the app open in the foreground for the best tracking accuracy. If you close the app or switch to another app, tracking may be less accurate.

 

Step 2: End your walk

  1. In the app, select hc_icon_walk.svg Walk again to stop recording.
  2. Your walk is automatically saved to your history.

 

You're all set!

Your walk is now saved. You can view it anytime in your Walk History along with all your previous walks from up to 12 months.

 


 

Viewing your Walk history

Want to see walks you've taken before? Here's how to find them.

  1. In the Tractive app, go to hc_icon_history.svg History and then Timeline.
  2. To filter walk entries, tap Walk at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap on any walk entry for more details.

To see previous walks, scroll through the timeline. You can see your walk history from up to 12 months ago.

 

You'll see the walk stats:

  • Total distance covered
  • Total duration
  • Route map
  • Date and time

 

Can I delete a walk from my Walk history?

Yes. You can delete walks from your history:

  1. In the Tractive app, go to hc_icon_history.svg History and then Timeline.
  2. To filter walk entries, tap Walk at the top of the screen.
  3. Select the walk that you’d like to delete.
  4. On the upper corner of the walk entry, tap hc_icon_delete.svg Delete.
  5. Confirm to delete.

You can only delete walks for pets that you own. This option won't be available to pets shared to you via Family Sharing.

 


 

Sharing your walk with friends and family

Want to share a memorable walk? Here's how.

  1. Open the Tractive mobile app.
  2. In the Tractive app, go to hc_icon_history.svg History and then Timeline.
  3. Select the walk that you’d like to share.
  4. On the side of the screen, tap hc_icon_share-android.svg Share.
  5. Choose how to share (Story or Post).
  6. Select the app where you want to share your walk.

Your walk will be shared with the route, distance, and duration.

 


 

Walk vs. LIVE Tracking: What's the difference?

Both features use location data, but they work differently:

Walk

  • Records the route you take during a walk
  • Uses your phone's GPS to track your path
  • Saves walks to your History so you can revisit them later
  • Focused on recording the walking session
  • Use for: Recording walks and building a walk history

 

LIVE Tracking

  • Shows your pet's real-time location (updates every 2-3 seconds)
  • Uses your tracker's GPS
  • Helps you find your pet if they're on the move
  • Focused on locating your pet right now
  • Use for: Finding your pet in real-time when they're moving

 


 

Troubleshooting

Why am I being asked to update my permissions?

If you’re prompted to update location and access permissions, it's because the Walk feature needs certain permissions to track your route accurately. Granting permission allows the app to always remain updated and connected (so distance/speeds/etc. can remain accurate).

What to do: Grant the requested permissions when prompted for the best tracking accuracy.

What if the Walk button is unavailable?

If Walk is grayed out or you don't see it, try these steps:

  1. Make sure the pet you’re walking with has a dog pet profile.
  2. Ensure your mobile phone is connected to the internet.
  3. Turn on your phone's location services.
  4. Enable Bluetooth on your phone.
  5. Check that your phone is connected with an adequate battery.

Once the Walk icon turns blue, you'll be able to use Walk to track your routes in the background.

Note: If you close the app or navigate away, it may not accurately track your walk. For best results, keep the Tractive app open in the foreground during your walk (though you can have the screen locked).

 


 

Important to know

Walk uses your phone's GPS, not just your tracker's. This means your phone tracks the route you take, while your tracker continues monitoring your pet's location.

Location services must be enabled. Walk needs access to your phone's location to track your route.

Accuracy depends on keeping the app open. For the most accurate walk tracking, keep the Tractive app in the foreground during your walk.

Walk history is based on your phone's location. The walk route shows where your phone went, which is typically where you and your pet walked together.
