Troubleshooting: I am receiving false notifications that my cat or dog has exited the Virtual Fence.

You're safely inside the house with your dog or cat, but the Tractive GPS says otherwise? Not to fear; the GPS device is working hard to locate your pet - but GPS signals may occasionally be blocked by the roof of your home or other natural/man-made structures, decreasing the accuracy of the reported GPS positions.

Learn how to fix this problem below.

Why does the Tractive GPS app notify me that my pet has exited the Virtual Fence?

If you are receiving notifications that your dog or cat has left the defined safe area or Virtual Fence, when in reality he or she has not, this does not mean that the tracker or app is defective. This can happen in cases where the GPS accuracy is not ideal due to environmental factors.

Most of the time, these false alerts are due to inaccurate position reports associated with the GPS tracker being used inside of a building or home.

GPS signals can be reflected by windows, water, roofs, tall building, forest, weather, and even air particles. In addition, the amount of GPS satellites that are in view can affect what you see in the app.

So while your pet may be indoors, the roof of your home is blocking the GPS signal; thus, a localization technique known as cellular triangulation estimates your dog to be down the road. As a result, you receive a false Virtual Fence outbreak notification.

How can I prevent false notifications from happening?

Our developers are aware of this issue and are doing everything possible to filter out those incorrect sets of location data. Until there is an update which will correct this issue, please follow the tips below to prevent any further false Virtual Fence outbreak notifications:

  1. Turn the device off while indoors or not in use, or anytime that you know that your pet is safely nearby.
  2. Minimize the use of LIVE Tracking while your pet or the tracker is indoors.
  3. Adjust the Virtual Fence:
    • Remove any unnecessary or overlapping Virtual Fences.
    • Enlarge the Virtual Fence area.
    • Set the Virtual Fence in a different shape.
    • Change the location of the Virtual Fence, so that the center is at the point where your pet is most often.
  4. Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone when the tracker/pet is nearby (available only on the new Tractive GPS Cat Tracker (IKATI), Tractive GPS CAT and Tractive GPS DOG).
  5. Contact Tractive to request that the Virtual Fence sensitivity of your tracker is lowered - this can help to prevent any unwanted/false notifications. With lower sensitivity, the tracker will wait/make sure your pet is really outside the Virtual Fence, before sending the notification. As a result of this change, Virtual Fence notifications will be delayed by 3 minutes. We can always change the setting back for you, should it not work out as expected.
  6. Check the accuracy of the Tractive GPS by taking the tracker on a walk (on your person) outdoors and in LIVE Tracking mode. With good results, this can rule out the possibility of a tracker defect.
