Resting Heart Rate: How-To Guide

Resting Heart Rate Monitoring is only available on our latest dog trackers (DOG 4, DOG XL/XL Adventure & DOG 6).

Track your pet's average Resting Heart Rate to monitor their overall health and detect early signs of illness.

What is Resting Heart Rate Monitoring?

Resting heart rate (RHR) is your dog’s average beats per minute (bpm). Your Tractive device initially needs 7 days to collect and analyze this data. By learning your pet’s behavior and vital patterns, Tractive can then establish a baseline.

If there are noticeable differences compared to your pet’s normal baseline, you will see in the Health tab of the app that their resting heart rate is lower or higher than usual on this day.

To get the most insights, it is recommended to attach the pet’s tracker to a well-fitted collar that is comfortable for your pet to wear during rest. The more your pet wears the tracker, the more accurate the insights are.

FAQs

How do I get access to the Resting Heart Rate Monitor?

To use resting heart rate monitoring, please ensure the following:

  • Use our dog trackers. Resting heart rate and resting respiratory rate monitoring is available with our dog trackers.
  • Use the tracker for at least seven days. Data from at least seven days is needed for us to learn what is normal for your dog to establish their baseline.
  • Use the tracker consistently. Keep the tracker on your dog as much as possible, especially when the dog is resting (except during charging). This will help us learn your dog's behaviour when resting.

You’ll now automatically have access to the feature and can start learning about your furry buddy’s resting heart rate.

Why does my app only show the “Learning…” status?

Learning indicates that we're still gathering RHR data to establish your pet’s baseline. Keep your tracker charged and attached to your pet, and within a few days, you'll have access to your pet’s health insight.

What does ”Sync Needed” mean?

Health data is synced from your tracker to your cell phone/tablet via a Bluetooth connection. If you see that a “sync” is needed, this means that the tracker hasn’t been close to your mobile device recently, and the latest data will not be shown in the app. To sync your tracker and cell phone or tablet, see the instructions in this article.

Why does my app show “Not Enough Data”?

This means your Tractive device couldn't provide any insights into your pet's RHR on this day. Please ensure your pet wears the tracker whilst resting.

How accurate is Resting Heart Rate Monitoring?

Our trackers feature a sophisticated sensor that measures movement. During the initial days of use, the sensor collects data to understand your pet’s typical RHR.

To establish your pet’s baseline RHR, we require a minimum of seven days of data. However, this baseline is continuously updated and refined with each day’s new data. Therefore, the more you use the tracker, the more precise and insightful the data becomes.

For optimal accuracy, ensure the tracker stays on your pet as much as possible, and ideally only remove it for charging. Consistent use will significantly enhance the quality and reliability of the resting heart rate monitoring data.

Is Resting Heart Rate available for cats?

At this time, RHR tracking is only available for dogs. The Health tab is also updated for cats, but only provides info on Activity and Sleep as of now.
